Romantic, unique and welcoming, this Victorian gentleman’s summer residence offers grandeur on a human scale. Every inch a home, but with all of the best bits of a five-star hotel, it’s the perfect venue for weddings and civil partnerships. Built in 1836 the house rests amidst the folds of its skirts - seven acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and majestic woodland – with views over to the lake. The grounds offer stunning backdrops for photography, lots of places to socialise and even more for private moments. You are never far from the sound of the River Troutbeck as it chatters along its route to Lake Windermere and the gentle splash from the ornate fountain at the house’s grand entrance. For weddings and civil partnerships outdoors, a crisp, white, licensed gazebo sits at the head of a velvety wedding green. Not using the wedding green but want to get here in a hurry? That’s fine; when the green is not in use for those tying the knot outdoors, it doubles as a helipad. The grounds at Broadoaks are positively glowing. Broadoaks underwent a considerable programme of refurbishment and boasts 20 luxurious and individually decorated boutique bedrooms for you to use on your big day. The Michelin-recommended restaurant prepares mouth-watering sit-down wedding breakfasts for up to 100 guests with up to five courses beautifully presented and created from locally-sourced produce. Or ask about something different – a BBQ or hog roast outside perhaps? For evening celebrations the Orangery transforms into a breathtaking party space where you can invite up to 130 guests, or, for a more intimate affair, you can enjoy a live pianist in the music room. We saw Broadoaks on an online search and went to visit and meet with one of the wedding planners. We decided there and then that we were definitely getting married there. The hotel itself is truly special. Beautiful building and grounds, and then each bedroom has its own character, but they’re all stunning in their own way. The staff are amazing. So accommodating and helpful. You really get the impression that it’s more than just a job for them - they do everything they can to make sure your stay/wedding is exactly as you want it. No detail was too big or too small for them. The food for our wedding breakfast was out of this world. We’ve been married a week now and our guests keep mentioning the food to us! Our guests also keep saying they’ll be back. And so will we. I’m so happy we chose Broadoaks for our special day because it was perfect. And the staff even got us a beautiful wedding gift that we will treasure. I can’t recommend this place enough for whatever stay/event you’re considering. Downton Abbey, ginger cats, sunken baths and fountains !Downton Abbey, ginger cats, sunken baths and fountains !
We recently got married at Kendal registry office and brought our six guests back to Broadoaks to celebrate with us and stay overnight . Everything was superb - total perfection - The meticulous attention to detail, the warm welcome, the mouth-watering food, ( surely deserving of a Michelin star some time soon?) the atmospheric grounds and fountain, the way in which the wonderful staff strode "Downton Abbey style" to the Retreat carrying heaving platters of goodies, the smooth and flexible way in which all my requests were handled, the efficacious and friendly yet non-intrusive nature of the lovely team, , the incredibly beautiful and gorgeous space that is the Retreat, the lovely little touches that most hotels forget about, such as matches, fresh milk, tissues in each room and lots of sockets! .... I could go on for ever! I'm quite "fussy" ( I prefer to say I like things "just so" - Others would call me "awkward" - heaven forbid!" ) - we have recently stayed at Glenapp Castle, the Torridon ( we love Scotland) and also the Chester Grosvenor to name but a few, - and I have to say that Broadoaks in our opinion outranks these top hotels in offering the best overall experience! In spite of this being a very small wedding with no ceremony at the hotel and no large wedding breakfast or night-time disco, the eight of us were treated like VIPs throughout. Our guests loved their rooms, one being the coach house suite with its own pagoda and terrace ( albeit a little chilly to use - rather like the outdoor sunken bath in the Retreat - but hey not to worry, as there was an indoor one too!) I believe it is always very important to have a happy team to show the public - and this positively shines through at Broadoaks ! Elaine oozes warmth, friendliness and efficiency, Taran is a total delight and Dan was charming - as were all the staff! It is so evident that everybody works in harmony and that they all really enjoy their work! The hotel is a credit to diligent owners Tracey and Jo, who thoroughly deserve their many accolades! My photographer described the Retreat as one of the most beautiful "indoor spaces" in the lakes - how right he was! We are already planning our next trip to Broadoaks, as are our guests, who were totally blown away by their stay! Furthermore, as animal lovers, it delighted us to see the loving way in which staff treated one of their neighbours who is a frequent visitor - a big soft ginger cat! Clearly a feline with exquisite taste, who enjoyed luxuriating in the beautiful music room of this pet-welcoming hotel. As people will note, I do not often give 5 star reviews - but in this case if I could have given six I would have! As I write, I seem unable to tick the marks for service, cleanliness and location - so in case these remain blank, It goes without saying I would give them all 5/5!
