The Pilgrims Rest is an East Sussex wedding venue full of rustic charm - perfect for exclusive use weddings and receptions all year round.
Licensed for wedding and civil ceremonies, it is a venue that gives you the flexibility to create your wedding day just how you want it. Whether you choose to have a DIY wedding, a fully caterered wedding or anything in-between our wedding coordinator will be there on the day to hold your hand and ensure your wedding runs seamlessly.
We have designed and furnished the building so that it needs little decoration but one that you can make your own. With no corkage charges and no hidden extras, The Pilgrims Rest is a wedding venue that is beautiful yet affordable; stunning yet relaxed.
The Pilgrims Rest is however more than just a beautiful old building. Having opened her doors to visitors and pilgrims to Sussex since C1420, this grand old lady has historic soul. She has hosted celebrations from medieval banquets to Georgian balls, Victorian luncheons to Edwardian tea dances.
All three reception rooms boast inglenook fireplaces. With endless historic features from ancient beams to linenfold doors, witch’s marks to ward off evil spirits and a secret tunnel hidden under the Great Hall fireplace that runs beneath the Abbey walls. At The Pilgrims Rest we are always looking to help our couples have a wonderful day and keep their costs down, so with this in mind we are lucky to offer two dressing rooms for grooms & brides; both designed to be the perfect backdrop for your pre-wedding photos. Rich, cosy and quintessentially British, we absolutely love it and so do photographers. The Pilgrims Rest is a truly unique Sussex wedding venue. When the sun is shining your guests can flood out into the beautiful tended rose and walled gardens. As the evenings draw in, stoke up the fires, light some candles then watch as she sparkles into life.

Amy and Amy-Lou were such a pleasure to work with and made the planning process so easy. The venue is beautiful and needs minimal additional decorations, which meant we were able to add our own little personal finishing touches. Both girls dealt with my million emails and calls and constantly guided me through the whole process start to the hangover the next day. I would 100% recommend The Pilgrims Rest for any wedding. A fabulous Tudor building which has all original features. It lends itself to such an intimate occasion. What can I say about the staff.........amazing. From the owner Becka to the 2 Amy's, to all the staff. You all went above and beyond to help create the most amazing day for Nick and Teresa. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. The building itself is simply beautiful and the provided decorations help to reduce costs on venue stylists etc and they are always complementary to the season. The DIY element helps you to have the wedding you want, not what you’re told you have to have. Choosing your own suppliers adds to the fun and unique personalisation too. The no corkage charge is also obviously a huge help! We would also recommend going over to France and the Calais Wine Superstore - we got all our wedding wine for 100 guests at under £200 and they tasted great too. The two dressing rooms are beautiful and provide great space for getting ready with your nearest and dearest (and also are amazing backdrops for photos)! The dining room feels like something out of Hogwarts (when my fiancé said that to me I was sold from our first visit). I personally feel the venue lends itself to an autumnal cosy or Christmassy vibe due to the fires, but I’m also sure it’s just as suited to any time of year wedding. Lastly, the Amy’s. We love them. Everyone loved them. They truly went above and beyond to ensure everything went to plan. Nothing was too much trouble. We are beyond happy to have had our wedding at The Pilgrims Rest, it helped us to have a wedding day beyond our expectations and like no other we’ve ever been to. We actually wished we were guests at our own wedding. Possibly the best review I can give is... I’ve been dreaming (and secretly planning) our wedding day for the past 13 years. The DIY aspect really makes sure that the day is exactly as you imagine. The ability to supply your own alcohol without corkage is a huge benefit. Both Amy's were fantastic. From our first meetings we had absolute confidence that we were in safe hands. They responded to all questions promptly and met all of our ideas with enthusiasm and made planning a wedding easy. On the day they went above and beyond and made sure that everything ran like clockwork. The Pilgrims Rest has a great selection of approved suppliers, we especially recommend the Boxed Girls and DJ Dean! The Pilgrims Rest is a brilliant venue and very worthy of a 5 star rating! Where’s the best photo spot at your venue?
The window overlooking The Abbey in the Bryant Bridal Room has wonderful light and beautiful old windows. With such an amazing historic building there are lots of great backdrops for photographs from old sandstone walls to stunning panelling.
Have you had any celebrity guest or wedding at your venue?
Yes, but that would be telling!
What’s your favourite canapé?
An old timer - devils on horseback
What’s your favourite midnight treat?
Chocolate of any type
What is your venue's most unique feature?
The vaulted Great Hall for the ceremony and then dancing with its inglenook fireplace.
What part of your business are you most proud of?
It is hard to pick one part. Our team are incredible and nothing is ever too much trouble and the building itself is extraordinary. We are very lucky to have both.
